Known as 'The Sport of Kings' horseracing is an equestrian sport that has been practiced over the centuries. There are records of horseracing during Roman times as well as in the 12th century when racing was known to have taken place on public holidays at Smithfield in London and at Chester, where races took place on Shrove Tuesdays and St George's Day, both major festivals during the medieval period.
